J.W. Gavin

James Walter “J.W.” Gavin, age 89, of Herbine passed away on January 22, 2021. He was born December 16, 1931, in Herbine, Cleveland County, the son of the late E.G. “Buck” and Geneva Shelby Gavin. He attended Free Hill and Woodlawn Schools. He served in the United States Air Force, and was a member of Bethel #2 Missionary Baptist Church. He was a tomato, chicken and cattle farmer and retired from the Arkansas State Forestry Commission. He was a Master Mason and member of Mill Creek Lodge # 178, he also served on the Prosperity Cemetery Board for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter Shelly Young Roberts, one sister, Dorothy Gavin Norton and one brother, Felton Gavin.

He is survived by his wife Pat Pevey Gavin, whom he married June 8, 1957, his daughters Debbie Young and husband Mark Young of Herbine, Donna Johnston and husband Wilton of Rowell, grandchildren, Ellie Johnston of Rowell, Gavin Johnston and his wife Emily of Monticello, great-grandchildren, Anna Beth Roberts and Julie Roberts of Rison and Tucker Johnston of Monticello.

Graveside services will be 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2021 at Prosperity Cemetery in Herbine with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
