Harry Phelps Obituary

Harry Houston Phelps, 86, of Rowell, AR went to be with the Lord, February 16, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. Born October 17, 1937 to the late James Royce Phelps and Velma Francis Reed Phelps. He received his education at Woodlawn School.

On December 27, 1958, he married the love of his life, Mary Alice McDaniel, they were married 63 years. They were known as Poppa and Nanny to all who loved them. Mr. Phelps showed just how great his love was for her by being her caretaker for many years until she passed.

Mr. Phelps was retired after 45 years of service as a welder at Central Maloney. He also farmed on his family land. He had a work ethic that could not be matched in all areas of his life. He was a comedian without even trying to be. His most favorite hobby and God given gift was raising a garden. He shared his knowledge with so many and his way of showing love and gratitude was to give produce to friends and family. He loved to cook and share with his loved ones as well. You never left his house hungry. One of his most favorite stories was taking Brad turkey hunting for the first time. He would also tell everyone about Sarah catching the 17lb catfish out of his pond. He loved fishing trips and squirrel hunting with Mary Alice and sharing coke floats with Brenna, Paisley, and Hudgin. He would tell anyone those three were his most favorite people.

Mr. Phelps was a member of Center Missionary Baptist Church. He served there faithfully for many years. It is there he met Mary Alice. He was a part of the Mission Builders. He also loved participating in the annual fish fry. Bro. Doney, Rhonda, Katie, Kerri, and Dennis were not just neighbors but family.  Most importantly he accepted his Lord and Savior and made sure his kids and grandchildren heard God’s word.

Mr. Phelps was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Donald Houston Phelps, Brothers James Royce Phelps Jr. (Pete), Ralph Henry Phelps, Jon Charles Phelps, Jerry Donald Phelps and sister Joann Phelps, and great granddaughter Whitley Young.

He is survived by his daughter Mary Catherine Eldridge (Mike), grandsons Brad Young (Karla), Matt Eldridge (Kandi), granddaughters Sarah Slaughter (James), Miranda Tucker (Joseph), Melissa Tumbleson (Mitchell), Lexie Phelps, Daughter in Law Stephanie Phelps, great grandchildren Brenna and Hudgin Young, Paisley Slaughter, Tinley and Brody Tumbleson, Beckett Eldridge and Kendyl Lehr.
